Uppsala University was founded in 1477. Today it is a comprehensive research university ranked among the best in the world, with 50,000 students and close to 5,000 researchers.

Initially, teaching at the University mainly consisted of lectures in philosophy, law and theology. The major donations made by King Gustaf II Adolf in the 1620s gave added impetus and the number of students increased sharply.

While being in the forefront of modern research and education, Uppsala University still has many ancient traditions, symbols and ceremonies that live on and are a natural part of academic Uppsala today.
